  • MODx Empowers

In the search for a general purpose, open source CMS I built test sites in about a dozen CMSes; including some of the popular ones like Drupal, Mambo, Joomla, and Xoops. They all were good but very narrowly focussed, and became excruciatingly painful as soon as you wanted to go beyond the types of sites they were optimized for. Then I found MODx and it was like a breath of fresh air! It provided a framework that helped me do anything I wanted. The tradeoff is that it has less drop-in modules than some of the others, and you have to roll up your sleeves and deal directly with the HTML, CSS, and sometimes PHP. If you're cool with that, then you'll find in MODx a supportive and capable friend and partner.

  • Robust as needed...not quite mature

I have implemented over 30 CMS solutions from high end commercial systems to mid-level to trying to make wordpress/drupal/joomla fit the clients needs.

From PHP and ASP to Struts and ColdFusion systems. MODx is worth a look.

It's simple enough to setup and get a site you want with the design you want and not so many 'centric' features that you have to disable sections of pre-written code to make it work. Find a module, copy it to a text box and place some tags, easy peezy. On the front end, login and get 2.0 style edit blocks to whatever you decide.

However, be prepared to spend some time learning the naming conventions and capabilities of the system among its scattered and incomplete documentation. IMHO, That's what keeps this project from going into a golden 1.0 release.

I love MODx!! Like others have mentioned, it is totally flexible and easy to learn. I created a one page overview of MODx with links to free MODx templates, examples of sites powered by MODx, and reviews comparing MODx to Joomla, Wordpress, Expression Engine and Drupal.

ModX allows you to produce your site as designed and not have to worry about the content as it is managed seperately. The learning curve is short and it's easy to grasp the naming concepts used within. A small but dedicated community help to solve issues and overrall is a nice simple experience.

Shows great potential but I'm a little shaky on the fact that is not even in v1 yet. Seems more of a BETA still. There are some bugs that still need to be worked out (noticeable bugs, {parse error in demo}) and some other things that could be improved.
